Naruto: Ninja Destiny (DS)
Naruto: Ninja Destiny is the new Naruto game for the Nintendo DS. It's a beat-em-up with a storyline that closely follows the anime. If you don't follow the anime then you can skip the story and get into the action, otherwise... well... just don't skip it?

The graphics and music are nice, they almost capture the style from the anime, but the colours of the graphics are a little blander. The effects are cool and the special attacks that are unique to every character look great. The movements are crisp and it's easy to see what's going on, even with a dozen or so Naruto's dancing about the screen. There are unique soundtracks for the game too.
The gameplay... As said it's a beat-em-up a-la Street Fighter/Tekken, but one of the few where you can almost always teleport to the other side of your opponent to attack their back. That sounds silly being able to constantly ambush, but since your opponent can do it too, it's works well. Teleporting also depletes chakra, which you can save for bigger and better moves, like the powerful signature moves unique to every character. There are items to use during the matches via touch screen, but they don't seem to influence the outcome much.

The game is easy to get the gist of, but unless your mind starts soaking up the secret techniques like a sponge, then the game will get repetitive. The thing about that is you'll have to fish through the manual yourself to learn them. Reading the manual is fine, but the game doesn't even seem to state the very existence of these techniques...

But other than that, I enjoyed playing the game, and enjoyed writing about it. It's not perfect, but still good. It's not too deep story-wise, but to be honest for a beat-em-up that's a good thing. Give it a go. :)
