COSPLAY - Short for "costume roleplay" is a type of performance art where participants wear costumes and accessories to 'dress-up' as a specific character from popular media. Most cosplay characters are usually sourced from various manga, anime, super-heroes, comic books, graphic novels, video games, or fantasy and sci fi movies.

COSTUMES: The object of cosplay is to become the character, so the details of the costume's construction are critical. Costumes must meticulously follow the design of the characters' attire. Even the more standard costumes are often very artistic.
It's not uncommon for cosplayers to educate themselves in sculpture or fiberglass work, to create a costume. Countless tutorials have been posted on the internet to aid members of the community.
Some cosplayers will buy their costumes from talented artists, while others may spend months creating the perfect outfit.
VENUES: Because the costumes are so elaborate, like-minded people gather to see each others' costumes, and show off their own amazing handmade creations.

In Japan, cosplay can be seen at public events such as video game shows, or cosplay parties. In countries outside of Japan, cosplay is mostly only done at comic or pop-culture conventions - like Armageddon in New Zealand!
TRENDS: A recent trend at cosplay events has been the increase in the popularity of non-Japanese fantasy and science fiction movie characters, perhaps due to the international success of films such as The Matrix, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.
